The foundation of the School\u2019s library dates back to 1530. Being part of the Debrecen College and named therefore as Little Debrecen, the School was under the purview of the Protestant Church for a long period. Peregrini, alumni returning from studying abroad donated a wealth of books to the School; therefore, the library stock underwent continued \u2013 albeit unsystematic \u2013 growth every year.<\/p>

D\u00e1niel Ertsey, who was a pastor in Mez\u0151t\u00far from 1777 till 1809, started cataloguing books according to subject and topic. The first librarian position in a contemporary sense was filled by religious education teacher S\u00e1ndor V\u00e9kony, who carried out planned stock enlargement and kept regular inventories of the library stock.<\/p>

Based on the Hungarian address book of museums and libraries, the Magyar Minerva published in 1902, the library stock amounted to 5,186 books, which was almost doubled in merely ten years.<\/p>

In the 1960s, the Antique Library was relocated to the main school building as the library wing had been refurbished to house a dormitory for male students.<\/p>

The School was reallocated to the Protestant Church to become a protestant secondary school in 1992. This triggered a buoyant growth in the library stock. In 1996, some 800 valuable book rarities were transferred from the Archives of the local protestant Church to the Antique Library.<\/p>

<\/p>

Current library stock tops at 56,000 books.<\/p>

At present, the Antique Library operates in its original place. The overall interior and exterior refurbishment and renovation of the Pet\u0151fi Road library wing had been completed by the Protestant Parish by 2018, and the Library was relocated to its original place.<\/p>

Some of the rarities that represent incomparable intellectual and cultural value in the Antique Library are:<\/p>

• Tome IX of Augustine dating from 1529 (the oldest book)<\/li>
• The works of Aristotle boundin codex pages from 1597 (the most valuable)<\/li>
• A hand-painted geographical atlas from 1572 (the most unique)<\/li>
• Pastor D\u00e1niel Ertsey\u2019s handwritten prayer book, 1794-1796. (the rarest book)<\/li><\/ul>
